Donegal Schoolboys advanced to the quarter-final of the U12 SFAI Inter League competition with a hard fought victory over neighbours Sligo/Leitrim at Sligo IT. Donegal started the better of the two teams and were unlucky not to take a third minute lead when Jack Murphy's corner fell to Jack McAuley on the edge of the Sligo/Leitrim box and he sent a dipping strike crashing off the crossbar. Donegal deservedly took the lead 10 minutes later when Enda McDevitt's through ball from the left released Conor Black through on goal and the striker took his chance at the second attempt. Sligo/Leitrim were almost gifted an equaliser when a poor clearance went straight to Luke Glennon on the penalty spot where pressure from the Donegal defence forced a tame shot into Adrian McLaughlin's hands. Sligo/Leitrim fired another warning shot into Donegal minutes later when Sam Barnes released a thundering strike only to be denied by a wonderful save by Adrian McLaughlin. The majority of the final minutes of the first half were played in midfield as both teams cancelled out opportunities that arose. Sligo/Leitrim began the second half with a fresh impetus and were rewarded when Sam Barnes' free kick was met by the head of Patrick Kenny to level the score. The concession of the equalising goal sparked a Donegal revival and within 8 minutes they had restored their lead. This time a long ball from Donal McBride allowed Jason McDaid to unleash a feirce shot from the corner of the box which gave Cathal Feeley little chance in the Sligo/Leitrim goal. A frantic last 10 minutes ensued with Sligo/Leitrim almost profiting from a scramble in the Donegal box. Jason McDaid also had a chance to add his second of the game however when played through was unable to get a firm strike on the ball. Sligo/Leitrim offered little as the seconds ticked down and it was Jack Murphy who had the last chance of note as he tested Cathal Feeley from a well worked short free kick.
