Donegal Schoolboys 1999 League Centre squad qualified for the quarter-final of the SFAI U-15 Inter League despite a 3-2 defeat to Cavan/Monaghan in Cootehill in Saturday. Having won their two home group games to Inshowen and Sligo/Leitrim Mark McConnell's side knew that a draw or a 1 goal defeat was enough to see them through on goal difference to the next stage. Donegal started well and after 12 minutes took the lead through Sean McBride from a header. Shortly afterwards they were two to the good when Shane Blaney scored direct from a free kick 30 yards out. Donegal had further chances to extend their lead but squandered their opportunities. Then just before half-time striker Conor Doyle scored for Cavan/Monaghan to make it 2-1. Donegal were in control for most of the second half mindful that the slender lead was still good eneough to see them through as group winners. Then with 10 minutes remaining Cavan/Monaghan were awarded a fairly dubious penalty which Tiarnan O'Reilly scored to tie the game up at 2-2. Donegal then defended in numbers for the final 9 minutes but were unable to prevent O'Reilly from scoring his second of the game in the last minute. Thankfully the final whistle blew straight from the restart much to the relief of the Donegal side who now meet Galway Schoolboys at home in a fortnight.
