There was heartbreak for Donegal Schoolboys 1999 League Centre squad when they were defeated 3-2 by Cork Schoolboys in extra-time following a thrilling tie at the Hospital Field in Donegal Town earlier today. Having been behind 2-0 after 25 minutes a goal from Sean McBride on the stroke of half-time brought Donegal back into the game and when McBride added a second midway through the second half Donegal were well on top and looked as if they would go on to win the game. Cork had the better of the early exchanges and went ahead after 8 minutes when James McSweeney stabbed the ball home from close range following a mix-up in the Donegal defence. Cork dominated the rest of the half and deservedly went 2-0 up after 28 minutes when Eoghan Davis squared for Alec Byrne to place the ball past Aaron Deeney in the Donegal goal. Donegal only threatened from corner kicks and it was from one of these that Sean McBride reduced the deficit when the ball fell to him 2 yards out and he made no mistake on 39 minutes. This goal sparked Donegal into life and their game was raised considerably in the second half. Jack Keaney was outstanding in the middle of the pitch and from one attack he played a beautiful ball into the path of Jordan Ryan whose effort was saved brilliantly by the Cork keeper but the ball fell kindly for McBride to tap in the loose ball. It was nothing more than Donegal deserved for their dominance but unfortunately they could not add to their tally in normal time. Cork were camped in their own half for most of the extra time period as Donegal continued to press forward in search of the winner. The best opportunity fell to Keaney who unleashed an unstoppable left foot drive from the edge of the area with five minutes remaining but it cannoned off the crossbar. Then with just 2 minutes remaining Cork came forward and when midfielder Peter Callanan found a bit of space 25 yards out he hit a magnificent effort which dipped under the crossbar for a dramatic winner. Referee was Stephen Toner and he was assisted by Paul Duddy and Patrick Martin.
