Michael played with Kildrum Tigers in the East Division of Donegal Schoolboys League and after some noticeable performances was drafted into Willie Mackey's 1994 League Centre squad. Impressed for the Ulster U-17 squad at the Inter Provincial tournament in 2011 and joined Derry City shortly afterwards. Made steady progress with the Candystripes which earned him International recognition at Northern Ireland U-19 level. Had a very successful season in the SSE Airtricity League in 2014 resulting in a big money move to Glasgow Celtic. Gained valuable experience out on loan with Alloa Athletic in the Scottish Championship but made the switch back to the Airtricity League with Dundalk in 2017 to replace Preston bound Daryl Horgan.
